Social Media The Beast-The Fad That Just Won’t Quit
Since The MySpace days, in 2002, we have had social media etiquette lessons, don’t be “that person” rants, drunk posting, even to how to take a selfie. Social media has changed how we communicate, wether you like it or not.
With all of the silliness that goes along with social media, the logical conclusion for a business owner would be to stay away from social posts. Social media has saturated our world so much that its mandatory for every company to have an online social presents.

To Blog Or Not To Blog
Networking is the concept that drives most business owners to build a fan base online is to become known and visible. This concept is very easy to grasp. Avon, Mary kay, and many others have built long lasting companies on this concept of networking. For a lot of people this concept is reason enough to put their company on Facebook, but for others it’s not reason enough. If networking was the only benefit to social media I would agree!
Social Media Goes Beyond Networking
This is exactly what motivated me to create The Modern Guide to Social Media. Contrary to popular belief networking is not why marketers insist that companies have a presents on social media.
A much bigger giant is pressing the social media issue, Google.
To say Google runs the world would be a fairly accurate statement. It’s a money machine. Ironically it became a money machine by refusing to sell out. It’s a truly beautiful concept.
Here is a quote directly from Google’s about us section, “We will do our best to provide the most relevant and useful search results possible, independent of financial incentives. Our search results will be objective and we will not accept payment for their inclusion or ranking.” They continuously provide the most relevant information.
I promise this related to social media!
Relevant is the KEY word here. How does one stay relevant? By staying in the news, by giving people a reason to talk about you. In order to provide the best search results, and maintain their status of most visited website in the world, they have incorporated social media into their search engines. This is know as search engine optimization (SEO). Google keeps track of what people are talking about online (aka: what’s relevant), on social media.
This is Google’s mission, literally.
Take a look at Google’s Mission Statement:
They are speaking of SEO, search engine optimization, organizing internet.
Social media is just one element to SEO, a very important element.
So hopefully you’re convinced that social media can significantly help your business.
